Emergency Situation in Oahu

On Friday morning, emergency alerts were activated across Oahu as officials raised alarms about a possible failure at the Wahiawa Dam. This prompted immediate evacuation orders for residents in communities located on the North Shore of the island. The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a Flash Flood Warning at 8:22 a.m. HST, following reports from local law enforcement indicating an imminent dam failure.

Shortly after, at 8:34 a.m., an alert from the Oahu Department of Emergency Management warned that a dam or levee failure was either occurring or anticipated, posing a significant risk of life-threatening flooding in areas downstream. Evacuations were mandated for regions below the dam, including parts of Haleiwa and Waialua. Residents were advised to evacuate without delay and were cautioned about heavy traffic, with recommendations to carpool when feasible.

Flooding was already reported along the Kaukonahua Stream, with potential risks extending to adjacent waterways and drainage systems. Affected areas include several streams and gulches, such as the North Fork of Kaukonahua Stream, Poamoho Stream near Kaukonahua Highway and Dole Fields, Kiikii Stream in Waialua, Mohiakea Gulch, the Anahulu River, and Helemano/Opaeula Stream near Haleiwa.

Officials warned that the situation could escalate to catastrophic flooding, with rapidly moving water posing threats to downstream communities and roadways. An evacuation map was released, detailing the affected zones on the North Shore. The evacuation area encompasses all of Haleiwa between Puuiki Street and Kamehameha Highway, as well as parts of Waialua from Kukea Circle to Otake Camp. Residents in these designated zones were instructed to evacuate immediately due to the imminent risk of sudden and severe flooding.

Emergency alerts reiterated the critical nature of the situation, urging: “TAKE ACTION – EVACUATE NOW,” as officials continued to monitor the dam and surrounding waterways closely.
