Urgent Calls for Sonam Wangchuk to End Hunger Strike Amid Health Concerns
Health Warnings for Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk
On Tuesday, demands intensified for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to conclude his indefinite hunger strike, following alarming updates about his health from Abhijit Dipke, founder of the 'Cockroach People's Party' (CJP). Dipke shared on social media that Wangchuk is experiencing significant muscle loss and severe pain. He reported that Wangchuk has lost 8.5 kilograms and his blood pressure is at 109/70.
A Plea for Wangchuk to End His Strike
Dipke recounted a brief conversation with Wangchuk, where he urged him to end the hunger strike. Wangchuk, however, calmly responded that the focus should be on the government and why they are not engaging in dialogue.
Day 17 of Wangchuk's Hunger Strike
Today marks the 17th day of Wangchuk's hunger strike and the 25th day of protests against Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Dipke appealed to the government not to turn this into a battle of egos, emphasizing that human lives are at stake. He stated that acknowledging mistakes is not a sign of weakness but rather a demonstration of maturity and accountability.
Support from Political Leaders
Wangchuk and the CJP have garnered support from leaders across various political parties. TMC leader Mahua Moitra also urged the climate leader to end his hunger strike while continuing the fight for justice. She expressed that Wangchuk's fast has united the youth of the country in their quest for justice, stating that while the government may not care about his life or that of millions of youths, his life is significant to them. Moitra implored him to end the fast and continue the struggle. A delegation from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, visited the protest site on Monday to show solidarity.
Support from Uddhav Thackeray
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also expressed his support for Wangchuk and the CJP's cause. In a post on social media, Thackeray announced that the Shiv Sena stands in solidarity with Wangchuk and Dipke's movement, while also appealing for Wangchuk to reconsider his hunger strike. Dipke shared details of his conversation with Thackeray on social media, thanking him for his empathy and support during this challenging time.
