Urgent Call for Reopening Postal Services in Barak Valley

Closure of Postal Offices Raises Concerns

Silchar, Dec 22: Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha has brought to the notice of Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia the abrupt shutdown of ten branch and sub-post offices in the Barak Valley, which he describes as a significant issue causing hardship for many residents.

In his official correspondence with the Union Minister, Purkayastha pointed out that these post offices, which have been closed since August, play a vital role in ensuring connectivity, promoting financial inclusion, and facilitating the distribution of essential government services in the area. Despite numerous requests and increasing public concern, only one of these offices has reportedly resumed operations.

In his letter, the MP underscored the urgency of the matter, stating, “There is a growing public demand for the swift restoration of postal services. The closures have had a particularly adverse impact on the elderly, farmers, and residents of remote regions who rely on local post offices for banking, remittances, and mail services.”

According to departmental data, all the affected post offices were profitable and had expanding customer bases.

Their closure not only disrupts public services but also leads to a loss of revenue for the Department of Posts.

Purkayastha has requested the Union Minister to take immediate action to reopen all ten offices, stressing that restoring these services is essential for public access to crucial financial and governmental resources.
