Guwahati, Dec 21: Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, has called on the Indian government to take immediate and decisive diplomatic measures regarding the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh.

Saikia described the incident as a shocking act of violence and a significant tragedy, highlighting the ongoing and serious threats faced by Hindu minorities and other vulnerable groups in Bangladesh.

He stated, “These targeted acts of violence not only violate human dignity but also breach fundamental human rights principles and the essence of good neighborly relations. The Ministry of External Affairs must engage with the Bangladeshi government at the highest levels to ensure a prompt investigation, justice for the victim, and effective measures to prevent future atrocities.”

Furthermore, he emphasized the need for international advocacy, urging India to proactively address the protection of minorities in Bangladesh in relevant international forums, including the United Nations, to foster a global consensus against majoritarian violence. Saikia urged the Indian government, which has enhanced its diplomatic standing worldwide, to leverage its strategic partnerships to promote constructive dialogue and advocate for institutional protections for minorities in Bangladesh.

Saikia also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond to this pressing humanitarian issue and provide reassurance to the Indian populace and the Hindu community.

“It is crucial for India’s diplomatic influence to translate into real security for those living in fear,” Saikia concluded.
