Threats to Haripur-Madhabpur Satra

Gauripur, March 3: The Haripur-Madhabpur Satra, located near NH-17, approximately 8 km from the Assam-North Bengal border and 50 km from Gauripur, is facing serious encroachment issues that jeopardize its existence. This Satra was founded by Mahapurush Madhabdev and Harihar Ata in the early 15th century.

Situated in Haripur within the Tufanganj subdivision of Coochbehar district, the Satra was initially established on 3 bighas of land donated by Koch King Naranarayan, designated as Brahmottar land. Currently, 20 families serve as Bhakats, managing the daily operations of the Satra.

Despite the Assam government allocating Rs 11 lakh for the construction of the main Kirtanghar, the project remains unfinished. Additionally, the construction of the Manikut is also incomplete.

Due to the absence of a boundary wall, local residents have encroached upon one-third of the Satra's area. A Bhakat mentioned that a group from Sualkuchi had purchased 13 kathas of land for the Satra, but the transfer has yet to occur.

While well-wishers constructed the Guru Griha, the Satra still lacks a dedicated bhakat griha and guest accommodations. The scarcity of drinking water is a pressing issue for both Bhakats and visitors alike.

The pucca well built by King Naranarayan is now abandoned. Although there is a dwelling for the Bhakats, it lacks essential amenities. Attempts by locals to establish shops near the Satra have been thwarted.

Currently, the Satra operates solely on the support of the Bhakats, whose financial situation is precarious, as the Assam government has not provided any grants. There is an urgent need for a guest house equipped with necessary facilities, completion of the half-finished Kirtanghar and Manikut, and renovation of the deteriorating Daul griha.

The Bhakats are calling for immediate renovations and an eviction drive to remove encroachments affecting the Satra.
