Upcoming SUVs in India: Tata Sierra, Volkswagen Tayron, and MG Majestor
Growing SUV Market in India
As the demand for SUVs continues to rise in India, automotive manufacturers are gearing up to introduce new models to maintain their competitive edge. The increasing popularity of the SUV segment has prompted companies to plan the launch of several new vehicles, adding to the already extensive range available in the market. Recent reports indicate that brands like Skoda, Volkswagen, and MG are preparing to unveil new SUVs in the domestic market, alongside other vehicles expected to debut soon.
Tata Sierra: A Modern Take on a Classic
Tata Motors is set to revive the iconic Sierra nameplate with a new model positioned above the Harrier. This updated version has been spotted undergoing tests in India, albeit heavily camouflaged. While Tata has not disclosed extensive details, the vehicle's classic SUV design and bold stance are evident. It is anticipated that the new Sierra will be equipped with a 1.5-liter Turbo GDI engine.
Design Features of the New Sierra
The upcoming Sierra is designed as a four-door SUV, reminiscent of the Range Rover Evoque but without a sloping roofline, which is often criticized for limiting rear passenger headroom. The new model features a completely redesigned front end and reinforced A and B pillars for enhanced safety. Incorporating a spacious greenhouse while adhering to safety standards posed a significant challenge for the engineers, but Tata appears to have successfully navigated this.
Volkswagen Tayron: A New Contender
The Tayron is set to replace the Tiguan All Space and is expected to feature a 2-liter turbo petrol engine similar to that of the Tiguan R line and the new Skoda Kodiaq. This engine produces 204 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox that distributes power to all four wheels. Volkswagen plans to launch the Tayron in India later this year, with assembly taking place at their Aurangabad facility as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. The Tayron will compete with models like the Jeep Meridian, Toyota Fortuner, and Citroen C5 Aircross.
MG Majestor: A Facelifted SUV
MG is preparing to introduce the Majestor, a facelifted version of the Gloster, aimed at competing with the Toyota Fortuner and the Legender. The new Majestor will feature split headlamps, a more aggressive grille design, and updated front and rear bumpers. Inside, it is expected to offer a premium experience with a redesigned dashboard, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a freestanding 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The anticipated price for this model is around INR 43 lakh.
