Details of the Upcoming Meeting
Aparajita Sarangi, the chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, announced on Tuesday that the committee's next meeting is set for Wednesday. She mentioned that representatives from NALSAR, the National Law University, and the Law Commission of India, based in Hyderabad, have been invited to participate.
Sarangi further explained that the officials and vice-chancellors from these institutions will attend the meeting to share their insights on the proposed bills. Expressing confidence in the process, she noted that consultations with various organizations and individuals have already commenced, with the first day of extensive hearings starting on Wednesday.
Context of the Joint Parliamentary Committee's Work
This marks the third meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee formed to discuss the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill and related legislation. Sarangi highlighted that the committee had previously invited the Law Commission, the National Law University in Delhi, and NALSAR to present their views on the bills.
She emphasized that the process of listening to organizations and individuals has begun, with the first day of discussions scheduled for tomorrow. The initial meeting was introductory, where all members gathered to discuss various aspects of the three bills presented to the committee.
Atmosphere and Expectations
Sarangi remarked that the atmosphere during the meetings has been very positive and cordial. She noted that the committee, established by the Lok Sabha, is functioning well. The 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill includes provisions for the removal of any Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or Minister from office if they are convicted of serious charges, which could lead to a minimum of five years of imprisonment.
