GUWAHATI, Nov 4: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections are set to take place in April-May of the upcoming year, following the urban local body (ULB) elections scheduled for March, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday.

During a press briefing after the State BJP's steering committee meeting, Sarma mentioned that the recent increase in power tariffs is a temporary measure, expected to last only three months.

The Chief Minister also highlighted discussions regarding the elections for the Mising Autonomous Council (MAC) and the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC), which are slated for November 30. He noted that these elections will occur without party symbols, ensuring that the State BJP maintains a neutral stance.

In contrast, the ULB elections in March 2027 will be conducted with party symbols, Sarma confirmed.

“We have initiated preparations for the municipal elections and reviewed the outcomes of the recent bypoll in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Additionally, we discussed candidate selection for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions in the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), with State president Dilip Saikia authorized to make the final decisions,” Sarma stated.

He reiterated, “The GMC elections will occur in April-May next year.”

Sarma also mentioned the ruling party's intention to strengthen its presence in Muslim-majority regions of Assam while adhering to the BJP's core principles.

“In the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, we received considerable backing from certain minority groups. However, we will remain steadfast on issues such as combating child marriage,” he added.

Regarding the power tariff increase approved by the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission, Sarma clarified that it is a temporary adjustment.

“The increase will not be substantial. Fluctuations in crude oil prices directly affect electricity tariffs, as we purchase power at higher rates during such times. The recent rise in oil prices is linked to the conflict in West Asia. However, this tariff hike is minimal and will be lifted once we recover our losses. It is not a permanent increase,” he explained.
