Upcoming By-Elections in Tripura and Nagaland Scheduled for April 9
By-Elections Announced for Two Constituencies
Agartala/Kohima, March 16: Following the announcement of the election schedule for four states, official notifications for the by-elections on April 9 in two Assembly constituencies—one in Tripura and another in Nagaland—were released on Monday.
As per the election authorities, the nomination process commenced on March 16, with the deadline for submissions set for March 23.
Nominations will be scrutinized on March 24, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar revealed the bypoll schedule for the Dharmanagar constituency in North Tripura and the Koridang constituency in Mokokchung district, Nagaland, which is designated for Scheduled Tribes.
Voting for both constituencies is scheduled for April 9, with results expected to be announced on May 4.
The need for a by-election in Dharmanagar arose due to the passing of Biswa Bandhu Sen, the Speaker of the Tripura Assembly and a prominent legislator.
Sen, aged 72, died on December 26, 2025, in a private hospital in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness.
He had served four terms in the Tripura Assembly, initially winning twice as a Congress candidate in 2008 and 2013, and later as a BJP nominee in 2018 and 2023.
The CPI (M)-led Left Front has nominated former MLA Amitabha Datta for the Dharmanagar bypoll, while the ruling BJP and other parties have yet to announce their candidates.
In total, 46,143 voters, including 23,763 women, are eligible to participate in the Dharmanagar by-election.
In Nagaland, the Koridang constituency by-election was prompted by the death of veteran leader Imkong L. Imchen, who passed away on November 11, 2024, in a Guwahati hospital after a short illness.
Imchen, aged 75, was elected five times from Koridang, initially as an Independent in 2003, then on Naga People’s Front tickets in subsequent elections, and finally as a BJP candidate in 2023.
The Koridang constituency has 22,390 eligible voters, including 11,013 women.
During the announcement of the Assembly election schedule for Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry, CEC Kumar also mentioned by-elections for eight Assembly constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura.
