Marriage Disruption Due to Betel Nut Consumption

In India, it is not uncommon for marriages to end due to dowry issues, but there are other surprising factors at play as well. One such case involves betel nut, traditionally known for its health risks. You might wonder how betel nut relates to marriage, but this incident will certainly leave you astonished.

Indeed, the health hazards of betel nut have now extended to affecting marital relationships. This particular incident took place in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, where a couple was set to marry. However, the groom's intoxication and betel nut chewing led to a dramatic turn of events. Upon witnessing the groom inebriated and chewing gutkha, the bride refused to go through with the wedding.

The groom attempted to persuade the bride for hours, but she remained resolute in her decision. According to Shailendra Singh, the officer in charge of Maniyar police station, the bride from Mishrauli village was engaged to a young man from Khejuri village. When the wedding procession arrived, the bride's observation of the groom chewing gutkha led her to decline the marriage.

After it became clear that the wedding would not take place, both families decided to return the gifts exchanged earlier. The wedding was scheduled for June 5, but the groom's addiction and betel nut consumption caused the relationship to collapse before it even began. Previously, a similar incident occurred in Hamirpur district, highlighting that substance abuse not only destroys lives but also relationships. Perhaps a new slogan should emerge: 'Avoid gutkha, or risk losing your relationship before marriage.'
