Unseasonal Rain Brings Relief to Delhi Residents Amidst Heatwave
Weather Changes in the National Capital
On Sunday night, the weather in the national capital and its surrounding areas took a significant turn. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and strong winds provided much-needed relief to Delhi residents from the sweltering heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this unexpected downpour resulted in a notable drop in minimum temperatures, making the morning in Delhi quite chilly.
The IMD reported that temperatures at various weather stations in Delhi fell several degrees below normal. At the prominent Safdarjung weather monitoring station, the minimum temperature was recorded at 18.8 degrees Celsius, which is 5.9 degrees lower than the average. In Palam, the minimum temperature was noted at 17.9 degrees Celsius, 7.7 degrees below normal, while the Ridge area recorded a minimum of 18 degrees Celsius, which is 7 degrees less than usual.
Rainfall Measurements and Temperature Forecast
The IMD also noted that the minimum temperature at Lodhi Road was 20 degrees Celsius, 3 degrees below normal, and Ayanagar recorded 19 degrees Celsius, which is 4.6 degrees less than average. Heavy rainfall persisted in several parts of Delhi from late night into the morning. Approximately 5.7 millimeters of rain was recorded at Safdarjung from 8:30 AM on Monday, while Palam also saw about 5.7 mm of rainfall.
In terms of other locations, Ayanagar experienced the highest rainfall at 13 millimeters, followed by Lodhi Road and the Ridge, each receiving 4 millimeters. The weather department anticipates that the maximum temperature in Delhi on Monday will range between 31 to 33 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) indicated that Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 106, categorizing it as 'moderate'. The CPCB defines AQI levels: 0-50 as 'good', 51-100 as 'satisfactory', 101-200 as 'moderate', 201-300 as 'poor', 301-400 as 'very poor', and 401-500 as 'severe'.
