Frequent Accidents on MRD Road

Guwahati, Aug 24: The MRD Road segment near the PWD office has become a hotspot for accidents due to its numerous large potholes. Throughout the day, several two-wheelers skidded and fell, leading to multiple incidents reported by Saturday evening.

Witnesses from a local media outlet observed nearly 20 accidents, primarily involving two-wheeler riders, including women and children. Fortunately, most victims escaped with minor injuries.

First-aid assistance was provided to many of the injured at the media office.

Riders struggled to navigate the hazardous stretch, which has become slippery and filled with potholes.

The road's condition has deteriorated over several months without proper maintenance. Recent rainfall has exacerbated the situation, turning the road muddy and perilous for travelers.

Efforts to clean and reconstruct drains have rendered footpaths unusable, forcing pedestrians to walk on the treacherous main road.

Despite numerous complaints and media coverage, the State Public Works Department has remained unresponsive. The contractor responsible for the flyover construction is obligated to keep the road in a safe condition during the project, as stipulated in the contract, with funds allocated for this purpose.

However, the contractor has been neglecting these responsibilities, and the government has shown indifference to the growing difficulties faced by commuters. Recently, the Chief Secretary instructed that the road be maintained, but these orders have also been disregarded. Complaints have even been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office regarding this issue.
