Unnao Rape Victim Meets Rahul Gandhi Amid Controversial Court Ruling
Meeting with Rahul Gandhi
On Wednesday, the Unnao rape survivor, along with her mother and activist Yogita Bhayana, met with Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, at number 10 on Janpath Road in New Delhi. This meeting took place following a controversial decision by the Delhi High Court that granted relief to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP legislator convicted in the rape case. Prior to the meeting, the survivor expressed her determination to seek justice and mentioned her desire to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Emotional Support from Congress Leaders
After her meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, the survivor shared that both leaders were visibly emotional, with tears in their eyes. They reassured her of their commitment to help her attain justice. She stated, "Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi cried after listening to my story. I also wish to meet the Prime Minister and the President. For the first time in the country, a rape accused is being granted bail, which undermines the safety of our daughters."
Protests and Police Intervention
Earlier in the day, security personnel reportedly prevented the survivor and her mother from protesting against the Delhi High Court's ruling, even allegedly assaulting the elderly woman. The survivor and her mother were demonstrating at India Gate against the court's decision. On Tuesday, both were taken into custody. They had planned to address the media at Mandi House on Wednesday, but the bus under CRPF security did not stop at the designated location.
