Unity Celebrated at Assam-Meghalaya Fishing Competition
A Festive Gathering at Hahim
Boko, Dec 21: A remarkable event showcasing solidarity between Assam and Meghalaya took place on Saturday, as hundreds of participants convened at Hahim in the Kamrup district for a fishing competition along the border of the two states.
Approximately 300 competitors from various tribal groups, including Khasi, Garo, Rabha, and Bodo, came together in a spirit of celebration and friendship.
Participants hailed from regions such as North Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, as well as Goalpara, Kamrup, Sivsagar in Assam, and even Nagaland, creating a vibrant mix of cultures.
Kailash Sharma, a prominent member of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of this annual event, which has been celebrated since 2011. He stated, “In this border area where disputes can arise, Hahim serves as a place where individuals from all communities unite, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
We embrace the Christmas spirit by fishing together and enjoying the day.”
Sharma also mentioned that such events play a crucial role in alleviating tensions and promoting collaboration between the neighboring states.
The competition, which ran from 9 am to 2 pm in a spacious pond, featured enticing prizes for the winners.
The top prize of Rs 1 lakh was awarded to Silchon Marak from Darangiri in Goalpara district for catching a fish weighing 3.615 kilograms.
The second prize of Rs 30,000 was given to Kaspar from Tynghor in West Khasi Hills, while Simanta Das from Singra, Boko, secured the third prize of Rs 10,000. Additionally, 25 participants received consolation prizes of Rs 2,500 each.
Competitors utilized various traditional fishing methods and baits, including earthworms, flour, and larvae from wasps and silkworms.
This lively contest not only tested the participants' skills and patience but also strengthened the bonds of friendship across the border.
