Women Go Clothes-Free for Five Days Each Year

In Pini village, there exists a rather strange custom where women refrain from wearing clothes for five days each year. During this period, they are also prohibited from engaging in conversations or joking with their husbands. This tradition is observed during the month of Sawan, where women remain unclothed for these five days.

Consequences of Ignoring the Tradition

It is believed that if a woman fails to adhere to this tradition, her household may face misfortunes or receive unpleasant news. This belief is a significant reason why the entire village continues to uphold this custom. However, there have been some changes over time; in the past, women would not wear any clothing at all, but now they opt for a thin woolen fabric known as 'pattu' instead.

The Story Behind the Tradition

There is a story that explains the origins of this belief. It is said that centuries ago, a demon would come to the village and abduct women who wore beautiful clothes. The demon was ultimately defeated by the deity Lahua, who is believed to still visit the village to eliminate evil. This incident led to the establishment of the tradition, prompting women to forgo clothing during the month of Sawan.

Restrictions During This Period

The residents of Pini village refer to the month of Bhadon, which falls in August, as the 'black month.' During this time, women not only refrain from wearing clothes for five days but also do not celebrate any festivities. They are not allowed to laugh, and husbands are advised to keep their distance from their wives. Failing to comply with these restrictions is believed to bring disaster to the household.
