Unique Holi Tradition in Rajasthan: Symbolic Marriage of Boys

A Glimpse into a Unique Tradition

Recently circulated images and videos showcase a centuries-old tradition from Banswara district in Rajasthan. Every year, on the eve of Holi (the night before the festival, during the month of Phagun), a symbolic marriage is performed at midnight between two young boys, typically aged between 8 and 14 years. This event is not a real wedding but a ritual steeped in local beliefs.

Key Aspects of the Tradition:

  • Origin and Beliefs: This custom is believed to be around 500-600 years old. Villagers hold that this ritual is essential for the protection of the village from a curse associated with the 'Kher' community. Failing to perform it could bring misfortune to the village. In some areas, it is linked to fertility, longevity of offspring, and the overall prosperity of the community.

  • Process of the Ceremony:

    • Local youths, referred to as 'Geriye', awaken two boys from their homes around 1 AM.

    • The boys are taken to the Lakshminarayan temple or a designated pavilion.

    • One boy is dressed as the groom (wearing a turban, pants, shirt, and sword), while the other is adorned as the bride (in a saree, with a mangalsutra and sindoor).

    • Vedic mantras accompany the rituals, including the varmala, sindoor daan, mangalsutra, and seven rounds around the sacred fire.

    • The entire village, along with elders and local leaders, witnesses the event, which is celebrated with drums, folk songs, and dance.

  • Recent Event of 2025-2026: Recently, the marriage of two boys named Chunnu and Munna gained viral attention. Both insisted on being the groom, but with the intervention of village head Nathji Bhai Patel and Dr. Swami Vivekananda Maharaj, Chunnu became the groom and Munna the bride. The ceremony also included a message for drug de-addiction through the burning of tobacco during the ritual.

This tradition reflects the rich diversity of Rajasthan's tribal and rural culture, blending faith, fear, and community unity. Social media users have shared it as a "remarkable ritual" and "unique tradition," with reactions ranging from fascination to surprise from a modern perspective.
