Dimapur, Aug 6: JP Nadda, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, visited Mon town on Wednesday, accompanied by Assam's Health Minister Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha member Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland, to assess the impact of recent landslides.
During his visit, Nadda examined the affected areas, particularly in Defence Colony and nearby Techa ward, where reports indicate that eight individuals lost their lives due to the landslides.
He engaged with families impacted by the disaster at the Konyak Union office, expressing his heartfelt condolences and describing the incident as deeply distressing.
Nadda pledged that the Indian government would take all necessary measures to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of the affected regions, announcing that a Central team would be dispatched to aid in relief efforts.
Mon District Commissioner Wennyei Konyak provided an overview of the disaster, noting that relentless rainfall had led to flooding and landslides in various areas, resulting in significant damage to roads, bridges, and public infrastructure.
Rendemo Shitio, the Assistant Manager for Response and Communication at the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, presented data indicating that heavy monsoon rains on July 19 and 20 caused severe landslides and flash floods throughout Mon district, leading to loss of life, destruction of homes and farmland, and the blockage of vital transportation routes.
He reported that the district experienced 83.95mm of rainfall on July 19, with a total of 341mm recorded from July 19 to 31.
