Union Minister Reviews ONGC's Efforts to Control Gas Leak in Assam

Minister's Update on Gas Leakage Control

On June 17, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, provided an update regarding the ongoing efforts by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to manage a gas leak in Sivasagar, Assam. The Minister stated that he had reviewed the 'well control' operations being conducted at the site.

Puri noted that the gas flow has persisted for four days, attributed to the exceptionally high pressure within the well.

He assured that local residents were evacuated promptly on the first day and are receiving adequate relief and support. ONGC has mobilized skilled personnel from various locations, along with high-capacity fire pumps and other equipment to address the situation.

The Minister highlighted the use of advanced techniques, including 'junk pumping,' and mentioned that ONGC officials are in regular contact with international experts.

To mitigate fire risks, a water blanket is being maintained continuously for cooling.

ONGC has deployed its most experienced Crisis Management Team (CMT) to tackle the gas leak at Well RDS#147, with operations being closely monitored by the company's senior management.

The company emphasized that geological challenges are a part of oil and gas operations, and as India's leading energy firm, ONGC adheres to strict safety measures. They are committed to controlling the gas leak as swiftly as possible.

In response to the incident, ONGC has coordinated with the Sivasagar district administration to ensure the safe evacuation of affected families, providing secure shelters, nutritious food, clean drinking water, and essential supplies.

To protect public health, ONGC has set up free medical camps that operate around the clock, staffed with doctors and equipped with necessary medications as part of their emergency response plan.
