Union Minister Proposes New Agricultural Institutes in Sambalpur to Boost Local Economy
Enhancing Agricultural Education in Sambalpur
Bhubaneswar: The Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, has reached out to Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, advocating for the establishment of four agricultural institutes in Sambalpur, emphasizing the area's significant agricultural potential.
In his correspondence, Pradhan pointed out that despite the agricultural diversity present in Sambalpur, the region has not realized its full growth potential in this sector.
He suggested creating a College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, a College of Dairy Technology, a College of Fisheries, and a College of Agri-Business Management. According to him, these institutions would pave the way for sustainable, inclusive, and knowledge-based development in the region.
Pradhan stressed the immediate need for the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry to cater to the rising demand for skilled veterinary professionals, researchers, and specialists. This college would enhance animal health, boost livestock production, and help prevent zoonotic diseases, thereby safeguarding public health.
Furthermore, he proposed a College of Dairy Technology aimed at training skilled personnel for the dairy industry, fostering research, and improving the quality and efficiency of dairy operations, which would contribute to economic growth in the dairy sector.
In addition, he mentioned that a College of Fisheries would enhance skills in aquaculture, fisheries management, and post-harvest technologies, creating new job opportunities.
Pradhan also noted the increasing market-driven nature of agriculture and the pressing need for experts in agri-business, supply chain management, marketing, and food processing. A College of Agri-Business Management would fulfill these requirements and empower the youth to innovate within the agricultural value chain.
He highlighted that the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has available land and some infrastructure at Chiplima, Sambalpur, which could be utilized for these new institutions. Additionally, the Fisheries and Livestock Development Department of the Odisha government possesses unused land that could be effectively repurposed.
The proposed colleges are expected to not only develop technical and entrepreneurial skills among local youth but also to foster sector-specific research and provide essential extension services to farmers. This initiative aims to enhance market connectivity, improve price realization, and increase agricultural production and farmers' incomes, ultimately contributing to rural prosperity.
