Union Minister Promotes Cycling for Health and Environment at Fit India Sundays Event

Encouraging Cycling for a Healthier Lifestyle

On Sunday, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, took part in the 80th edition of the 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' initiative. He urged citizens to incorporate cycling into their daily lives, emphasizing its numerous health, environmental, and economic advantages.


Benefits of Cycling

During the event, Mandaviya highlighted that cycling is beneficial for both physical and mental health, while also addressing larger societal issues. He stated, "Today marks 'Sunday on Cycle'... Cycling promotes heart health, enhances physical and mental fitness, and uplifts the spirit. It serves as a remedy for pollution and aids in maintaining fitness; additionally, it helps mitigate traffic congestion. Moreover, it reduces our reliance on foreign fuel imports," he explained.


Joining the Fight Against Obesity

The Minister encouraged the public to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative against obesity by adopting cycling as a regular exercise. "Let’s unite in the Prime Minister's campaign against obesity by cycling to maintain our fitness," Mandaviya urged.


A Successful 80th Edition

Mandaviya led the nationwide celebration of the 80th Fit India Sundays on Cycle from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, in partnership with Sathya Sai Seva Organisations. The event, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of spiritual leader Sathya Sai, attracted over 9,000 enthusiastic participants who engaged in community runs, cycling, Zumba, and Yoga sessions.


A Movement for Fitness

Launched in December 2024 by Mandaviya, this initiative has evolved into a widespread movement encouraging individuals of all ages to commit to "fitness ki dose, aadha ghanta roz" (30 minutes of daily fitness). To date, more than 3 million people have participated in events across numerous locations nationwide.


Addressing Obesity for a Developed India

Speaking to the enthusiastic crowd, the Union Sports Minister stated that Sundays on Cycle aims to combat obesity, noting that "one in four individuals in India is overweight. Fitness is crucial for everyone. Our Prime Minister has set a goal for a developed India by 2047. For a nation to be recognized as developed, the health of its citizens is vital, and maintaining fitness is key to good health."


Mandaviya urged citizens to allocate one hour away from their screens to focus on their health through sports activities. He added, "Sundays on Cycle is part of the Prime Minister's Fit India movement, and it is essential for all citizens to run or cycle to keep their hearts and bodies healthy."
