Union Minister Pabitra Margherita Concludes African Tour, Strengthens Ties with Indian Diaspora
Strengthening India-Africa Relations
Johannesburg, July 27: Pabitra Margherita, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, wrapped up his ten-day journey across southern Africa on Saturday.
Emphasizing India's dedication to enhancing relationships with the continent through 'mutual trust, goodwill, and a shared history,' the Minister addressed the Indian community in Johannesburg before heading to Dubai.
He stated, 'India's relationship with Africa, including South Africa, is shaped by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our connection with Africa is not just transitional; it is transformational.' He urged the diaspora to actively contribute to strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
During his visit to Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa, Margherita referred to the Indian diaspora as 'one of our greatest assets.'
He also motivated expatriates to start new businesses, initiate collaborative projects, and explore emerging markets in India, South Africa, and beyond.
Earlier in the week, Margherita represented India at the fourth G20 Development Working Group meeting held at Kruger National Park, where South Africa currently holds the G20 presidency.
On July 25, he engaged in bilateral discussions with Maropene Ramokgopa, South Africa’s Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, extending invitations for South Africa to join the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
He reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting Africa's priorities, particularly in areas such as debt sustainability and access to essential minerals.
In a social media post, Margherita expressed, 'Glad to meet Minister Ramokgopa. Expressed India's support for the priorities of the South African presidency.'
On the sidelines of the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting, he also met with Thani Mohamed-Soilihi, France’s Minister of International Partnerships, where they discussed AI collaboration, global financial reforms, and enhancing disaster resilience frameworks under the 4P initiative—People, Planet, Prosperity, and Partnerships.
Margherita’s visit is part of India’s broader diplomatic efforts in Africa, aimed at establishing sustainable partnerships in energy, infrastructure, and innovation.
