Union Minister Dismisses Lockdown Rumors Amid Global Supply Concerns

Clarification on Lockdown Speculations

New Delhi, March 27: On Friday, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the public's concerns by stating that the rumors regarding a nationwide lockdown are unfounded. He emphasized that the government is not considering any such measures at this time.

Puri took to the social media platform ‘X’ to share, “The global landscape is constantly changing, and we are vigilantly observing developments related to energy, supply chains, and essential goods. Under the guidance of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji, we are taking all necessary actions to ensure that fuel, energy, and other vital supplies remain available for our citizens. We are fully equipped to tackle any emerging challenges.”

He further asserted, “India has shown remarkable resilience amidst global uncertainties, and we will continue to respond in a timely, proactive, and coordinated manner.”

Reiterating his stance, he stated, “Rumors about a lockdown in India are entirely false. Let me clarify, there is no proposal being considered by the Government of India. It is crucial for us to remain calm, responsible, and united during these times. Spreading rumors and inciting panic is both irresponsible and harmful.”

Puri's comments come in light of rising global oil and gas shortages, which have led to speculation about a potential lockdown in India, alongside concerns regarding the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), described as ‘worrisome’.

Earlier this week, the Indian government firmly dismissed any speculation regarding a nationwide lockdown, asserting that there are no intentions to impose restrictions on public movement or economic activities. Officials clarified that recent statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been misinterpreted.

The confusion arose from the Prime Minister’s comments on “preparedness” during recent parliamentary sessions, which were made in relation to ongoing tensions in West Asia and their possible economic repercussions.

The surge in rumors coincided with the sixth anniversary of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, further fueling online concerns. However, the government clarified that the call for “COVID-like preparedness” pertains solely to administrative readiness and contingency planning, not to any stay-at-home orders or mobility restrictions.
