Aizawl, Oct 13: During a recent address, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the necessity for banks and financial institutions to enhance their lending practices in the Northeast. He highlighted the importance of developing loan products that cater specifically to the unique needs of each state, rather than applying a uniform approach.

Speaking at the third Northeast Bankers’ Conclave held at Mizoram University, which was organized by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in partnership with the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi), Scindia remarked that this annual gathering should act as a “scorecard” to measure progress rather than merely a ceremonial event.

“A key takeaway from the Agartala conclave was that a generic package will not suffice for the Northeastern region,” he stated, noting that while the previous conclave concentrated on infrastructure, the current discussions were focused on improving access to credit for those in need.

Scindia mentioned that the Rising Northeast Summit had attracted investment commitments totaling approximately Rs 4.3 lakh crore, with around Rs 40,000 crore already initiated following his ministry's follow-up efforts.

“This eagerness for investment requires a proactive response from the banking sector,” he urged, advocating for enhanced collaboration to transform these commitments into tangible projects.

He also pointed out that task forces led by chief ministers, established after the North Eastern Council’s plenary, had devised development roadmaps.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who led the task force on the North Eastern Economic Corridor, proposed the creation of an integrated multimodal mobility corridor, an aviation hub, and a tourism circuit for the Northeast.

Scindia stressed that such initiatives necessitate sufficient capital and tailored credit plans for each state.

During the conclave, Lalduhoma called on banks to adopt a more proactive lending approach, aiming to elevate Mizoram’s credit-deposit ratio from 55.83% in 2025-26 to at least 67% by 2028-29.

He pointed out that seven banks in the state had a credit-deposit ratio below 40% as of June 2026 and urged for district-specific, time-bound lending targets that extend beyond Aizawl.

Lalduhoma also raised concerns about the poor performance of credit plans in agriculture and other private sectors, as well as a downturn in the MSME sector.

He encouraged lenders to invest in sectors such as tourism, healthcare, education, agro-processing, bamboo, handloom, and logistics.

“The potential exists here. Entrepreneurs are serious about their ventures. Our challenge is to connect that potential with the financial resources necessary to realize it,” he stated.

On the previous day, Scindia engaged with students from Mizoram University and participants of the Ashtalakshmi Darshan Phase-II program, encouraging them to explore innovative career paths and become problem-solvers.

He also urged them to uphold Mizo cultural values, particularly “Tlawmngaihna,” which embodies selflessness, courage, hospitality, service, and community responsibility.

Additionally, Scindia inaugurated development projects worth approximately Rs 350 crore in Mizoram, including the Aizawl Institute of Arts and Music for the North Eastern Region at Tuivamit, and virtually laid the foundation for nine other projects.
