Minister's Stance on Reservation and Social Justice

Dehradun, August 7 - Ramdas Athawale, the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, emphasized on Friday that reservation is a constitutional provision, and opposing it contradicts the fundamental spirit of the Constitution. During his two-day visit to Uttarakhand, Athawale addressed a press conference where he highlighted that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar envisioned reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, although it was not feasible at that time.

Supporting the proposed caste census, the minister stated that it would aid in assessing the social and economic conditions of various communities. This assessment would enable the government to effectively deliver welfare schemes to the genuinely eligible individuals. On the topic of women's empowerment, Athawale remarked that initiatives to provide reservation for women would enhance their participation in democratic institutions.

He expressed hope that the delimitation process would progress with broad political consensus. Regarding incidents of question paper leaks, the minister mentioned that the government has enacted stringent laws to curb such crimes and ensure strict action against the offenders. He also urged the public to socially ostracize those involved in such leaks.

In relation to the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, Athawale called upon all political parties to cooperate in ensuring smooth proceedings in the interest of the nation. He stressed that meaningful discussions on public interest issues are essential for a healthy democracy. The minister praised Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, referring to him as a 'good friend' and commended the developmental initiatives underway in the state under his leadership.
