Union Minister Advocates for Mirabai Chanu's Arjuna Award Nomination
Minister's Initiative for Recognition
Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav, the Union Minister of State for Ayush and Health, has proactively reached out to Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports. In his correspondence, he has recommended that Mirabai Chanu, India's renowned weightlifter and Olympic medalist, be considered for this year's prestigious Arjuna Award, as stated in an official press release.
Chanu's Remarkable Achievements
In his letter, Jadhav emphasized Chanu's extraordinary accomplishments and her significant impact on Indian weightlifting. The Minister pointed out that the athlete from Manipur has made history with her stellar performances at the Commonwealth Games, instilling immense pride in the nation.
He noted her impressive record of securing gold medals at consecutive Commonwealth Games, highlighting her status as the first Indian athlete to achieve this feat on each occasion. Additionally, Jadhav praised her outstanding performances in the 48 kg weight category, which include record-breaking lifts in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift categories.
A Dream Yet to be Realized
Jadhav also mentioned that Mirabai Chanu has received numerous prestigious awards, such as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Padma, along with an Olympic medal. However, her childhood aspiration of winning the Arjuna Award, a dream she has cherished since her early training days in her village in Manipur, remains unfulfilled.
A Call for Recognition
In urging the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports to consider her nomination, Jadhav stated that awarding Mirabai Chanu the Arjuna Award would be a well-deserved acknowledgment of her exceptional talent, remarkable performances, and significant contributions to Indian sports. He further highlighted that Chanu's inspiring journey from a small village in Manipur to becoming one of India's leading weightlifters exemplifies her determination and dedication, serving as a source of inspiration for countless young Indians.
