Agartala, June 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Tripura on June 4-5 to evaluate the readiness of the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies in addressing various challenges along the India-Bangladesh border.
A senior official revealed on Tuesday that after leading the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya, on June 4, Shah will arrive in Agartala later that evening.
During his time in Tripura, the Home Minister will convene a high-level meeting with BSF officials and other security personnel to discuss border-related issues.
Before this meeting, Shah plans to visit specific border areas in the West Tripura district to gain firsthand insight into the current situation.
While at the Bangladesh border, he is expected to lay the groundwork for several infrastructure initiatives, engage in a tree plantation campaign, and participate in a Sainik Sammelan.
Additionally, the Home Minister will perform the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for a hotel project that is a collaborative effort between the Tripura government and a private entity.
The Tripura government, along with the BSF and the West Tripura district administration, is making extensive arrangements for the two-day visit of the Home Minister.
With an 856-km international border with Bangladesh and being surrounded on three sides by the neighboring country, Tripura faces significant challenges such as illegal migration, cross-border smuggling, and other trans-border crimes.
A senior BSF official noted that security measures along the International Border have been heightened since unrest began in Bangladesh during June-July 2024, particularly after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
In a recent address at the BSF Investiture Ceremony and Rustamji Memorial Lecture in New Delhi, Shah announced that the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, plans to create a robust border security framework within the next year under the "Smart Border Project," which will utilize drones, radars, advanced surveillance cameras, and other modern technologies.
Shah also instructed BSF units in Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal to work closely with local administrations, police, panchayats, and revenue officials to effectively curb infiltration and bolster border security.
