Union Health Ministry Pushes for Transparent Healthcare Pricing Across India
Enhancing Transparency in Healthcare Services
New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has issued a directive to all states and Union Territories (UTs) mandating that the fees for services and facilities provided by clinical establishments be prominently displayed. This initiative aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and a patient-focused approach in healthcare delivery.
In a communication addressed to the Chief Secretaries of states and UTs, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized the need for a thorough review of adherence to relevant regulatory standards. The goal is to ensure that information regarding healthcare service charges is readily visible and accessible to patients and their families.
The health secretary noted that clearly displayed rates would empower patients and their families to comprehend the potential costs of treatment, enabling them to make informed healthcare choices and budget for medical expenses. Increased transparency is expected to reduce misunderstandings and disputes related to billing, thereby building trust in the healthcare system.
The letter references the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act of 2010 and the Clinical Establishments (Central Government) Rules of 2012, which establish a regulatory framework for clinical establishments. According to these regulations, clinical establishments in states and UTs where the Act is enforced must display the fees for each service and facility in a prominent location, in both the local language and English, to assist patients and their families.
