This diverse group showcases the country's extensive talent pool, featuring well-known athletes like Manu Bhaker, Lovlina Borgohain, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Nikhat Zareen, and the Indian cricket teams, alongside Mirabai Chanu, Aman Sehrawat, and Jyothi Yarraji.
Surprising Names on the Start Lists
Among the athletes, two unexpected names have emerged: David Beckham and Ronaldo. While these names are globally recognized in football, they are not the football stars fans might think. Instead, they represent India's track cycling team.
Who Are David Beckham and Ronaldo?
David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam are the two cyclists making headlines. Beckham, from Car Nicobar, was named after the famous footballer by his uncle, inspired by Beckham's iconic goal in the 2002 World Cup. The 23-year-old has previously competed in the Commonwealth Games and recently finished sixth in the men's keirin final at the Asian Games 2026.
Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam, a 24-year-old from Imphal, Manipur, was named after Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazario. He gained recognition as the first Indian track cyclist to win a medal at the Asian Track Championships in 2022. At the Asian Games 2026, he finished sixth in the repechage round.
Social Media Buzz Around the Cyclists
The unusual names of these cyclists have sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with fans humorously questioning the absence of Lionel Messi and other football stars. Many users took to their platforms to express their amusement and support for the Indian cyclists, highlighting the coincidence of their names.
India's Medal Standings
As the games progress, India has climbed to fifth place in the medal standings, boasting a total of 75 medals, which includes 15 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze. The Indian team continues to excel across various sports at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026.
