Unexpected Inheritance: The Surprising Will of a Poor Woman
A Shocking Revelation
It is often said that one cannot truly gauge a person's worth just by their appearance. We only understand someone based on a few encounters, leaving us unaware of their true circumstances or possessions. Thus, when something unexpected occurs, it can be quite shocking.
Typically, individuals with substantial wealth draft their wills in advance, revealing their contents only after their passing. However, this story revolves around the will of a less fortunate woman. Her home was in disrepair, and her garden was neglected. When her will was read after her death, the community was left in disbelief, whispering among themselves about how this could be possible.
What Did the Poor Woman's Will Contain?
Hilda Levy, a resident of Whitstable in Kent, lived in a semi-detached house built in the 1970s. She passed away at the age of 98. Upon reading her will, it was revealed that she had an estate worth £1.4 million, approximately 16 crore rupees. Of this, £5.5 million was allocated to her friends and Canterbury Hospital. Additionally, around £3 crore was designated for her friends at London’s Whitstable Healthcare and Moorfields Eye Hospital. The revelation of her charitable donations astonished many, as her home appeared to be in such poor condition that it was hard to believe she was a millionaire.
Where Did This Wealth Come From?
Upon investigating Hilda Levy's background, it was discovered that she arrived in England as a refugee from Germany in the 1930s, having lost her family in the Holocaust. Orphaned, she was adopted by a woman named Ellen Jeffery in England. She was the daughter of Dr. Friedrich and Mrs. Irma Levy and spent her entire life in England. As for her wealth, it was revealed that she inherited a portion of her uncle's estate, who had settled in America. He had distributed his wealth, exceeding 300 crore, among his siblings' families and distant relatives. Hilda was one of the beneficiaries of that estate.
