New York, Oct 24: On Saturday, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, reiterated the critical role of the UN in tackling global issues, fostering peace, and safeguarding human rights, emphasizing that the organization is more essential than ever as it celebrates its 81st anniversary.
In his message for United Nations Day, Guterres underscored the UN's enduring commitment to resolving conflicts through diplomacy and international law, fighting against poverty and hunger, advocating for human rights, and providing crucial assistance to those affected by wars, disasters, and displacement.
In a post shared on X, the UN leader expressed that the organization will persist in enhancing its capacity to assist people and address contemporary challenges.
“For 81 years, the @UN has been: Resolving disputes through diplomacy & laws. Striving to eliminate poverty & hunger. Advocating for human rights. And providing life-saving support to individuals facing war, disaster & displacement. Today, the United Nations is needed more than ever. We will continue to strengthen the UN to effectively serve people & tackle the challenges of our time,” Guterres stated.
In a video message commemorating United Nations Day, he remarked that this day not only honors an international body but also the principle that humanity's future relies on collaborative efforts among nations to promote peace, development, and human rights.
“On United Nations Day, we celebrate not just an organization, but a concept: Humanity’s future hinges on our capacity to unite in advancing peace, development, and human rights. For 81 years, the UN has embodied that concept. Resolving disputes through diplomacy and laws, not arms. Working to eliminate poverty and hunger. Advocating for human rights and delivering essential aid to those affected by war, disaster, and displacement,” he added.
“From trade and technology to protecting the health of people and the planet, promoting gender equality, and ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls, the United Nations is a fundamental component of our global community. Its role is more crucial than ever,” he concluded.
Guterres also emphasized the UN's commitment to advancing gender equality and creating opportunities for women and girls.
United Nations Day is celebrated every year on October 24 to honor the implementation of the UN Charter in 1945. This date signifies the formal establishment of the United Nations following the ratification of its founding document by the necessary majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.
