UN Raises Alarm Over Human Rights Violations in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir

UN's Call for Accountability in PoK

United Nations: A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced serious concerns regarding the security conditions in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), emphasizing the necessity for accountability regarding actions taken against individuals participating in peaceful protests.

The Secretary-General stands behind the efforts of his High Commissioner, and we sincerely hope that the appeals made by Mr. Turk will be heeded, stated Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq on Friday.

Responding to media inquiries about the situation in PoK and the Secretary-General's perspective on recent events, Haq highlighted the importance of addressing these issues.

Last month, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed alarm over the developments in PoK, advocating for a thorough and impartial investigation into the fatalities of protesters and the Pakistani government's ban on the Joint Awami Action Committee, along with the arrest of its leaders.

Concerns were also raised regarding internet access restrictions and limitations on public gatherings, which violate the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

When asked if there would be calls for accountability regarding the crackdown on protesters, Haq emphasized that all authorities must permit peaceful protests, which is particularly relevant in this context. If individuals have been harmed while peacefully protesting, accountability is essential.

Turk had previously urged for calm in PoK amidst rising unrest ahead of the regional elections scheduled for the end of the month, as stated in a release from Geneva last month.

The statement noted that since June, numerous individuals, primarily protesters but also law enforcement officers, have reportedly lost their lives in the lead-up to the Legislative Assembly elections on July 27.

The High Commissioner has called for immediate, thorough, and impartial investigations into all fatalities resulting from the unrest, affecting both protesters and security personnel.

The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a coalition of traders, transporters, students, lawyers, and activists behind the protests, has been banned under anti-terrorism legislation for allegedly jeopardizing public order and security.

The statement urged authorities to guarantee complete internet access across the region, with the High Commissioner advocating for meaningful and inclusive political dialogue to address the fundamental issues and grievances of the local populace.
