UN Human Rights Chief Raises Alarm Over Tibet and Global Human Rights Violations

Concerns Raised at the Human Rights Council

Geneva: Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has voiced significant worries regarding the persistent violations of rights faced by individuals in Tibet. He has called for the alignment of local laws and policies with international human rights standards.

During his address at the 59th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk provided a sobering overview of the current global human rights situation.

He mentioned his ongoing direct discussions with China on various issues.

Highlighting the human rights abuses occurring in China, Turk pointed out the stagnation in essential legal reforms necessary for adherence to international human rights laws.

"In Tibet, cultural and other rights continue to be infringed upon. I urge for the release of all individuals detained for exercising their rights and for legislation to be aligned with international human rights standards," stated the UN human rights chief.

"I remain engaged with China on numerous matters. However, I am troubled by the lack of progress in crucial legal reforms to ensure compliance with international human rights law. I also regret that we have not yet resolved the individual cases we have raised," he added.

"My office continues to receive alarming reports of violations in Xinjiang, including unjust prison sentences, incommunicado detentions, and restrictions on fundamental rights. In Hong Kong, the ongoing enforcement of national security laws raises serious concerns about the diminishing civic space," he further noted.

Additionally, Turk expressed grave concern regarding the escalating military tensions between Israel and Iran, calling for de-escalation and urgent diplomatic efforts.

He emphasized the necessity for both parties to fully respect international law, particularly in protecting civilians in densely populated areas.

The UN Human Rights Chief condemned the current trajectory of escalating conflicts and the blatant disregard for international human rights and humanitarian laws as unacceptable.

He urged the global community to uphold international law, protect human rights, and resist any erosion of the foundational principles of the United Nations.
