UN Chief Urges Immediate Release of Detained Staff in Yemen
Call for Action from the UN Secretary-General
On June 3, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, emphasized the urgent need for the unconditional release of UN personnel held by the Houthis in Yemen.
"This month marks a full year since numerous individuals from the United Nations, along with national and international NGOs, civil society groups, and diplomatic missions, have been arbitrarily detained by the Houthi authorities in Yemen," he stated in a recent announcement.
"I reiterate my demand for their immediate and unconditional release, including those who have been held since 2021, 2023, and most recently in January of this year."
Guterres asserted that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners should never face targeting, arrest, or detention while fulfilling their duties to assist the communities they serve.
"The ongoing arbitrary detention of our colleagues represents a significant injustice against those committed to providing essential aid and support to the Yemeni people. This situation has further restricted our operational capabilities and hindered mediation efforts aimed at achieving peace," he remarked.
He also noted the significance of Eid Al-Adha, highlighting that this Muslim festival is a moment for compassion and a chance to alleviate the suffering of families who are forced to celebrate without their loved ones, as reported by Xinhua.
The UN will persist in exploring all avenues to facilitate the release of the detained personnel, urging member states to show solidarity and enhance advocacy for their freedom.
Guterres condemned the death of a World Food Programme staff member in detention earlier this year, calling for an immediate, transparent, and thorough investigation into the incident, as the Houthis have not yet provided an explanation.
According to Stephane Dujarric, Guterres' spokesperson, there are currently 23 UN staff members still held by the Houthis.
