Umrangso Residents Seek Resolution for Land Acquisition Issues
Concerns Raised by Umrangso Villagers

Haflong, Sept 30: Residents from the village of Umrangso, located 19 kilometers away, have formally approached the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) with a memorandum addressing their concerns regarding land acquisition and compensation linked to the New Umrangso Limestone Block project by JK Lakshmi Cement Ltd.
In their memorandum, submitted on September 25, the villagers requested a reduction in the size of the land earmarked for the limestone block, which currently spans approximately 200 hectares.
They also called for fair compensation for the land and standing properties, in line with existing compensation laws, and urged the implementation of targeted corporate social responsibility initiatives in the impacted community.
The villagers noted that a significant amount of land had previously been allocated for cement production and limestone extraction to promote industrial growth in Dima Hasao and Assam.
Despite this, they expressed that many of their concerns remain unresolved.
The memorandum urged DHAC officials to act promptly to address these issues for the benefit of the affected residents.
This development follows the Assam Cabinet's approval on September 24 for a substantial investment of Rs 11,000 crore by JK Lakshmi Cement to set up a clinker manufacturing facility along with four cement grinding units in the state.
This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 24.
The Chief Minister stated that this investment is expected to create approximately 2,000 direct jobs in Assam.
