ULFA-I Cadre Surrenders in Arunachal Pradesh Amid Ongoing Counter-Insurgency Operations

Surrender of ULFA-I Cadre in Tirap District

Margherita, March 4: In the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, a member of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) has surrendered to security forces in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The individual who surrendered has been identified as Bitul Baruah, a 31-year-old self-proclaimed 2nd Lieutenant, who was reportedly active in the ULFA (I) faction.

According to an official press release, intelligence reports indicated the presence of a ULFA (I) member in the vicinity of Horu Chinghan.

In response to this information, the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles initiated a targeted operation on Tuesday from their Company Operating Base (COB) located at Noglo.

“Upon arriving at the suspected site, efforts were made to communicate with the individual and encourage him to surrender. After prolonged negotiations and operational pressure, the cadre consented to lay down his arms and was subsequently taken into custody at COB Noglo,” stated a defense spokesperson.

During the surrender, security forces seized a 0.40 caliber pistol, a magazine, and two live rounds of ammunition.

The official statement emphasized that this incident highlights the success of intelligence-driven operations and the compassionate, persuasive tactics employed by the Khonsa Battalion.

“The force is dedicated to fostering peace, security, and stability in the region and continues to encourage misguided youth to reintegrate into society,” it further noted.

Ongoing investigations and necessary legal procedures are currently in progress.

Khonsa, a small town situated in a valley surrounded by the Himalayas, serves as the administrative center of Tirap district in Arunachal Pradesh.

The ULFA (I), under the leadership of 68-year-old Paresh Baruah, has been engaged in insurgent activities primarily in Assam for over forty years.

In a related development, security forces in Arunachal Pradesh recently thwarted a significant terror plot by apprehending a militant from the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) and recovering a stockpile of weapons and ammunition during a joint operation in the Longding border district.
