Ukrainian Forces Launch Bold Nighttime Assault on Russian Naval Base
Kyiv's Strategic Strike on Novorossiysk
Kyiv: In a remarkable nighttime operation, Ukrainian forces utilized anti-ship missiles, jet-powered drones, and sea drones to target a significant Russian naval installation along the Black Sea coast, as reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday.
Since the onset of the conflict over four years ago, Ukraine has developed advanced drones that have consistently attacked Russian vessels in the Black Sea, including both military ships and oil tankers. Both nations share coastlines along this strategic body of water.
Officials in Kyiv assert that Ukraine's unmanned fleet has effectively restricted the operations of Russia's previously dominant naval presence in the Black Sea, marking a significant achievement in the ongoing conflict.
Despite these successes, Ukrainian officials believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains determined to continue the war, even as his larger military struggles with slow and costly advancements on the battlefield, alongside U.S. diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a resolution.
Zelenskyy indicated via social media late Tuesday that Putin is preparing for a rapid mobilization of several hundred thousand additional troops by the year's end, based on intelligence reports from Ukraine.
Targeting Key Infrastructure
The Ukrainian military executed a distinctive operation aimed at the naval base in Novorossiysk, which is the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea, according to Zelenskyy's social media update on Wednesday.
The assault impacted air defense systems, piers, and other port facilities in the city located in the Krasnodar region.
Governor Veniamin Kondratyev of Krasnodar reported that hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district during the night.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that over 500 Ukrainian drones were intercepted by their air defenses.
Tragically, an eight-year-old child lost their life in the Novorossiysk attack, and another individual succumbed to injuries after their home in the Temryuk area was struck, according to Kondratyev. Additionally, 12 others were reported injured in the region.
Debris from the intercepted drones fell on four industrial sites and 21 residential buildings, although officials did not provide specific details regarding the extent of the damage.
Novorossiysk is also home to a vital international oil terminal, with the Grushovaya oil transshipment complex being one of the largest hubs for oil and petroleum products in southern Russia.
In February, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns regarding Ukraine's strikes on Novorossiysk, noting their impact on American oil interests in Kazakhstan.
The Caspian Pipeline Consortium operates a pipeline from Kazakhstan's Caspian coast to Novorossiysk, facilitating a significant portion of crude exports from three major Kazakh oil fields, in which U.S. companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil hold stakes.
Russian Drone Strikes in Ukraine
In illegally annexed Crimea, Russian air defenses reportedly shot down 115 Ukrainian drones over Sevastopol overnight, as stated by the city's Russia-appointed head, Mikhail Razvozhayev, who also mentioned damage to 10 apartment buildings and 25 private homes.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's air force announced on Wednesday that Russia launched 138 long-range strike drones and an unspecified number of missiles against Ukraine overnight, resulting in damage across 16 locations.
In the southern Kherson region, a large-scale Russian drone assault resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to two others, as reported by regional head Oleksandr Prokudin.
Additionally, a shopping mall in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia was destroyed during these attacks, according to local authorities.
