Ukraine Intensifies Drone Strikes on Moscow Amid Ongoing Conflict
Major Drone Attack Targets Moscow Oil Refinery
In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has executed one of its most extensive drone assaults since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion. This latest strike targeted a prominent oil refinery in Moscow for the second time within a week, leading to considerable disruptions at the city's airports. Enormous clouds of black smoke were seen billowing from the Moscow Oil Refinery, situated approximately 15 kilometers from the Kremlin. The attack resulted in over 500 flight delays and cancellations as aviation authorities temporarily halted operations at four airports in Moscow.

Kyiv has consistently targeted Russian energy facilities to undermine the financial resources supporting Moscow's military operations and to bring the war's impact closer to the Russian populace.

Zelenskyy Warns Moscow As Ukraine Pushes For More Support
The drone strike occurred shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conducted what he termed an "important coordination call" with US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron following the G7 summit. Zelenskyy stated, "If Ukraine is going to burn, your Moscow will burn too," emphasizing that these attacks aim to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in negotiations. He reiterated that Ukraine would persist in its response as long as Russia continues its military aggression.

This latest attack represents another setback for Putin's security, following previous drone strikes on his hometown of St. Petersburg earlier this month during a significant economic forum attended by international dignitaries. On the day of the attack, Putin was in Kazan, hosting leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as Moscow sought to enhance its trade and political relationships with the bloc. Russian state media provided limited coverage of the incident, while pro-Kremlin publications acknowledged the need for improved air defense systems around the capital.
Increased Support for Ukraine from EU and NATO
EU, NATO Step Up Backing For Kyiv
As the conflict enters its fifth year, Zelenskyy visited Brussels for discussions with NATO and European Union leaders. Ukraine and Germany formalized an agreement to collaboratively develop an air defense system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy referred to this initiative as the inception of an "anti-ballistic missile coalition" and called on other nations to participate. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas remarked that Russia is "on the back foot militarily, economically, and politically," urging for increased support for Ukraine.
Thick black smoke and flames engulfed sections of the Moscow Oil Refinery, with videos capturing soot-covered rain falling on nearby vehicles. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha took the opportunity to remind Russians of the war's repercussions, stating, "Your country started a war of aggression against ours. For years, it has been killing our people. Ask Putin when he is planning to end it," he posted on X. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin later reported that the fire had been largely contained, with emergency teams working to extinguish remaining hotspots.
Repeated assaults on energy infrastructure seem to be straining fuel supplies across Russia, with several gas station chains implementing restrictions on fuel purchases. Independent reports indicated that one in four stations had introduced some form of limit. However, Moscow authorities maintained that fuel supplies in the capital remained stable and that all petrol stations continued to operate normally. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that air defense systems intercepted 555 Ukrainian drones overnight, including nearly 200 aimed at Moscow. The strike also resulted in damage to residential buildings in the Moscow region, with Governor Andrei Vorobyov reporting that 17 individuals, including two children, were injured by falling debris.
