UK Implements Social Media Restrictions for Children Under 16
New Social Media Regulations in the UK
The United Kingdom has joined the ranks of Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia by instituting a ban on social media access for individuals under the age of 16. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that this initiative aims to protect the well-being of young people. The new regulations will implement an "Australia-plus" framework, which not only restricts livestreaming on safer platforms but also prevents children from interacting with strangers on gaming applications.
Additionally, government officials are considering the possibility of enforcing social media curfews for minors, although detailed information regarding this proposal is anticipated to be released next month. This initiative follows a three-month public consultation that examined various strategies, including a total ban on social media, aimed at minimizing children's exposure to potentially harmful online content.
As reported, the UK's decision aligns it with a growing number of nations striving to enhance online safety for children. Countries such as Australia, Canada, Brazil, and Indonesia have already enacted laws or proposed age restrictions for social media access, while others like France, Spain, Denmark, Thailand, and South Korea are contemplating similar actions.
Starmer remarked, "How we keep kids safe online is one of the biggest debates of our time. This is a choice about whose side we’re on: families across the country, or a status quo that isn’t working," as cited in reports. Despite facing some criticism from within his party regarding his leadership, the Prime Minister characterized the proposed regulations as a “world-leading” measure to protect children online, suggesting that the UK's approach may surpass Australia's current restrictions for those under 16.
Furthermore, the proposal is expected to introduce additional protective measures, as indicated by The Sunday Times. These could include limitations on chatbot functionalities, specific features within gaming applications, and a curfew aimed at reducing late-night social media activity among older teenagers.
Reports indicate that these restrictions will apply to major platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Threads, Twitch, Kick, and Reddit. This initiative follows a nationwide consultation that garnered approximately 116,000 responses from parents, children, and technology sector representatives, marking the highest engagement level for any UK public consultation since the government's 2012 survey on marriage equality.
