Guwahati, July 13: NorthEast United FC has secured the signing of UEFA Europa League champion Jairo Samperio, alongside fellow Spaniard Andy Rodriguez, for the upcoming 2025–26 season. The two players participated in a training session with the team in Guwahati on Sunday.

At 31 years old, Jairo is a dynamic attacking player, adept at playing on the wings as well as in central forward positions. He began his career at Racing Santander, making his professional debut in 2011 before transferring to Sevilla FC in 2013.

During his single season with Sevilla, Jairo netted four goals in 25 matches and celebrated a UEFA Europa League victory. He later joined Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga, where he spent three seasons and notably scored against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in a 2-1 triumph.

“I am thrilled to be part of NorthEast United FC and excited for this new chapter in my career in India. Competing in a different league and representing such a passionate community is something I eagerly anticipate. I look forward to experiencing the energy of the Highlanders’ supporters and contributing to the team’s achievements,” Jairo expressed.

After his tenure in Germany, he played for Las Palmas, Hamburger SV, Malaga CF, and Hungarian clubs Budapest Honved FC and Mezokovesdi SE. Most recently, he was with Sestao River in Spain’s third division before his transfer to India.

"Jairo brings exceptional experience from top-tier leagues in Spain and Germany. His technical skills, tactical awareness in the attacking phase, and ability to influence matches with goals and assists will enhance our offensive strategy,” stated Juan Pedro Benali, head coach of NorthEast United FC.

“Signing a player of Jairo’s caliber signifies our ambition. His extensive experience in elite European competitions, paired with his eagerness to take on new challenges, makes him a significant asset for the club,” added Mandar Tamhane, CEO of NorthEast United FC.

In addition, Rodriguez, 35, who played for FC Cartagena in the Spanish second division last season, is a versatile midfielder capable of fulfilling various roles in central positions and even stepping back into defense when necessary. He is a product of the Real Madrid Academy and has also represented Levante UD, SD Ponferradina, and Burgos CF.

Rodriguez has made 219 appearances in the Spanish second division, contributing 21 goals and 14 assists. In total, he has played nearly 450 matches across all Spanish competitions, scoring 66 goals and providing 18 assists.

“I am excited to join NorthEast United FC, marking my first experience playing in India. I have heard wonderful things about the club, and I am eager to begin. I look forward to making a positive impact on the team and creating memorable experiences both on and off the field,” Rodriguez stated.
