Uddhav Thackeray Open to Resigning as Shiv Sena Leader Amid Party Challenges
Uddhav Thackeray's Stance on Leadership
During the 60th anniversary celebration of the party, Uddhav Thackeray expressed his willingness to step down as party leader if members believe he is unfit for the role. He emphasized that he would continue to fight as long as the Shiv Sainiks support him, but insisted that the party should not fall into the hands of 'thieves and looters.' Thackeray referenced Balasaheb Thackeray's decision to refrain from joining Congress, reaffirming his commitment to the party's distinct identity and founding principles.
Internal Party Discontent
Among the nine Lok Sabha MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT), six have openly defied the party leadership. Despite a whip being issued, they did not attend meetings and have written to the Speaker requesting separate group status. They cited fears of merging with Congress and straying from their ideology, while also demanding to sit with the Shinde faction's MPs. This move resembles the split that occurred in 2022, and if two-thirds support is confirmed, it could invoke anti-defection laws.
Thackeray's Emotional Address
Facing a potential split for the second time in four years, Thackeray stated that he has led the party for over a decade and is prepared to step down from the top position of Shiv Sena (UBT) in light of ongoing attacks. Speaking at an event in Mumbai for the party's 60th anniversary, a visibly emotional Thackeray told his supporters, 'If someone from the party becomes the next Shiv Sena chief, I would be happy, but I will not let it fall into the hands of thieves.' He reassured that he remains steadfast in facing all challenges.
Reassurance to Supporters
Thackeray expressed his desire that no Shiv Sainik would blame him for resigning from the Chief Minister position in 2022 or for not retaining his membership in the Legislative Council in 2026. He noted that recent events have not discouraged Shiv Sena (UBT) workers but have instead invigorated them. He criticized the rebel MPs' claims of fearing a merger with Congress, stating, 'If we did not merge with BJP after 30 years of partnership, how could we merge with Congress? I fear that the BJP's Maharashtra unit may merge with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.'
