Thackeray Brothers Unite for BMC Elections
Following their recent setbacks in the municipal elections in Maharashtra, both Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray are contemplating a partnership to salvage their political standing. Observing the overwhelming support for the NDA, they believe that joining forces could help them regain some respect. After their defeat in the assembly elections, the brothers had previously shared a stage and shook hands, but the results from the municipal elections did not reflect any significant improvement. Party officials have announced that they will collaborate to contest the BMC elections.
Seat Distribution Agreement Nearly Finalized
According to sources, an agreement regarding the distribution of the 227 seats in Mumbai is almost finalized. The Shiv Sena (UBT) is expected to contest around 150 seats, while the MNS will aim for 60 to 70 seats. However, there are some disagreements over seat allocation in areas such as Shivdi, Vikroli, Lower Parel, and Bhandup, which will be resolved through the intervention of Uddhav and Raj. Sanjay Raut has stated that the alliance is established, with only the formal announcement pending.
Historical Context of the Thackeray Brothers' Split
After Uddhav Thackeray took control of the undivided Shiv Sena, a disgruntled Raj Thackeray formed the MNS in 2006. Since then, the MNS has contested various elections independently. Recently, both brothers united against the inclusion of Hindi in Maharashtra's school curriculum, sharing a platform in Worli. Their meetings have become more frequent, and discussions among leaders from both parties regarding the BMC elections have been ongoing, with a final decision expected soon.
Challenges Ahead for the Thackeray Alliance
Raj Thackeray has a significant youth following, particularly among those who feel marginalized. As the BMC elections approach, it is anticipated that incidents may arise that could further unite the brothers. However, it is crucial to remember that 70% of Mumbai's voters are from outside the state, while only 30% are Marathi voters. This demographic reality poses a challenge, as driving out non-local voters could lead to a significant shift in support. The local dynamics are further complicated by the presence of Eknath Shinde's faction of Shiv Sena and the local influence of the Congress party.
