Uday Bhanu Chib's Arrest: A Blow to Democracy

Uday Bhanu Chib, the national president of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), was apprehended by Delhi police on February 24, 2026. His arrest is linked to a 'shirtless' protest that took place during the 'India AI Impact Summit 2026' at Bharat Mandapam. During the demonstration, IYC members wore T-shirts featuring images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the U.S. President, while chanting slogans against the India-U.S. trade deal. Authorities have labeled Chib as the mastermind behind the protest, accusing him of inciting riots and assaulting police officers.

Following his arrest, Chib was presented in Patiala House Court, where he was remanded to police custody for four days. Although the court later granted him bail, the police obtained a stay on this decision, and the case is ongoing. The Congress party has condemned this action as an attack on freedom of expression, while police argue that the protest disrupted public order and raised national security concerns.

Response from Hari Singh Chib Uday Bhanu Chib's father, Hari Singh Chib, who serves as the vice president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, strongly criticized the arrest. In an interview, he stated, "This is not just an attack on my son but on democracy itself. Every individual has the right to express their views. Farmers, youth, and the textile sector will be affected by the India-U.S. trade deal. Uday did nothing wrong; I am immensely proud of him. He is fighting for the youth and farmers. This is a conspiracy to silence him, but they cannot succeed."

Hari Singh Chib further mentioned that if justice is not served, they will continue their legal battle. Uday's mother, Rajni Bala, also expressed pride in her son and urged the youth to fight like Bhagat Singh.

Congress's Stance Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders have labeled the arrest as unconstitutional and indicative of the Modi government's authoritarianism. The Youth Congress has organized protests nationwide, resulting in clashes in various locations, including Delhi and Nagpur. The Congress asserts that the protests were against the farmers, youth, and the trade deal, rather than being riots.

This incident has become a focal point of political controversy, raising issues of freedom of expression alongside questions about law and order and the nature of protests. Uday Bhanu Chib is currently out on bail, and the case is still pending in court.
