UAE Closes Airspace Amid Regional Security Concerns
UAE Airspace Closure Announcement
In the early hours of March 17, the United Arab Emirates declared a temporary and complete closure of its airspace. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) referred to this action as "an exceptional precautionary measure" aimed at ensuring the safety of flights and air crews while protecting the UAE’s territory in light of rapidly changing regional security situations. The authority indicated that this decision was made after a thorough evaluation of security and operational risks and in full collaboration with both national and international bodies. It emphasized that maintaining airspace safety and safeguarding the UAE’s sovereignty are of utmost importance. Passengers were advised to reach out to their airlines for the latest updates regarding flight schedules, and airlines, in conjunction with local authorities, are providing necessary accommodations and assistance as required. The GCAA assured that it will keep relevant authorities and the public updated on any further developments.
Incident Near Dubai International Airport
Fire Near Dubai International Airport
This announcement followed a drone attack near Dubai International Airport on Monday, which ignited a fire close to one of the airport’s fuel tanks. The Dubai Civil Defence responded promptly and managed to control the fire effectively. Authorities confirmed that there were no reported injuries. As a result of the incident, some flights were redirected to Al Maktoum International Airport, and all safety protocols were activated to ensure the protection of residents, airport personnel, and operations. The Dubai Media Office noted that the fire was a consequence of the drone strike but was swiftly contained.
In a separate occurrence in Abu Dhabi, a missile reportedly struck a civilian vehicle in Al Bahyan, leading to the death of a Palestinian, as reported by the city’s media office. The UAE reiterated that the safety of passengers and flight crews is its highest priority and expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and understanding during these unprecedented circumstances. Iran and its allies have been conducting a series of missile and drone strikes against several neighboring countries, including attacks on oil facilities, airports, and critical infrastructure, in retaliation for US–Israel operations on Iranian soil, targeting locations in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, where essential infrastructure such as refineries and airports have been affected or intercepted amid the ongoing conflict.
