Two Law Students Arrested for Disrupting Supreme Court Proceedings
Arrests Made Following Courtroom Incident
On Wednesday, law enforcement officials reported the arrest of two law students for allegedly obstructing proceedings during a Supreme Court hearing, mistreating individuals present in the courtroom, and assaulting security personnel. The arrested individuals include Prabal Pratap Singh (24), a third-year law student from Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandra Bhan (23), a second-year law student from Raebareli. Their arrests are linked to an incident that occurred on July 10 during a Supreme Court session.
According to police, the incident took place in Court Number 13 during the hearing of the case 'Prabal Pratap and Others vs. State of Uttar Pradesh (through Commissioner)' concerning a Special Leave Petition (Civil).
Prabal Pratap, who was representing himself, allegedly disrupted the proceedings by using inappropriate and unparliamentary language, throwing papers in the courtroom, and creating a disturbance. A senior police officer stated that when security personnel intervened to maintain decorum, he used criminal force against them, hindering their official duties. Based on the Supreme Court's remarks regarding the accused's behavior, both individuals were taken to the Institute of Human Behavior and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) for medical evaluation. The police reported that doctors found no immediate need for psychiatric treatment for either of them.
During the investigation, police also recovered pamphlets containing objectionable material from the accused.
Following a complaint from the Supreme Court's security personnel, an FIR was registered at the Tilak Marg police station under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Subsequently, both suspects were remanded to two days of police custody as the investigation continues.
