Divorce Case Over Hygiene Issues

Turkish Woman Wins Divorce Over Husband's Poor Hygiene

In a surprising turn of events, a woman in Turkey has filed for divorce based on her husband's lack of personal hygiene. Typically, relationships may end due to domestic violence or infidelity, but this case highlights a unique reason for separation.

The woman, identified only as A.Y., claimed that her husband rarely bathed and emitted an unpleasant odor due to his infrequent bathing habits. Reports indicate that he would wear the same clothes for up to five days without changing, and brushed his teeth only once or twice a week.

To support her claims, A.Y. brought witnesses to court, including mutual acquaintances and even colleagues from her husband's workplace, all of whom corroborated her statements. The Ankara Family Court ruled in her favor, granting the divorce and ordering the husband to pay 500,000 Turkish Lira (approximately $16,500) as compensation for his lack of personal hygiene.

A.Y.'s attorney, Senem Yilmazel, emphasized the importance of shared responsibilities in a marriage. She stated that if one partner's behavior makes shared life unbearable, the other has the right to seek a divorce. This case serves as a reminder of the significance of maintaining personal hygiene in relationships.

Witnesses testified that the husband bathed only once every 7 to 10 days, leading to a foul odor emanating from both his body and mouth. Colleagues expressed discomfort working near him due to the smell. Ultimately, A.Y. decided to end her marriage, drawing parallels to a previous case in 2018 where a Taiwanese man divorced his wife for bathing only once a year.
