Turkish Woman Wins Divorce Over Husband's Poor Hygiene

In a surprising turn of events in Turkey, a woman has taken her husband to court over his lack of personal hygiene, leading to their divorce. Typically, relationships may end due to domestic violence or infidelity, but this case highlights a unique reason for separation.

The woman, identified only as A.Y., claimed that her husband rarely bathed and emitted an unpleasant odor due to his infrequent washing habits. Reports indicate that he would wear the same clothes for up to five days without changing, and brushed his teeth only once or twice a week.

To support her claims, A.Y. brought witnesses to testify, including mutual acquaintances and even colleagues from her husband's workplace, all of whom corroborated her statements. The court in Ankara granted her request for divorce and ordered her husband to pay 500,000 Turkish Lira (approximately $16,500) as compensation for his lack of personal hygiene.

A.Y.'s attorney, Senem Yilmazel, emphasized the importance of shared responsibilities in a marriage. She stated that if one partner's behavior makes shared life unbearable, the other has the right to seek a divorce. This case serves as a reminder of the significance of maintaining personal hygiene in relationships.

Witnesses in court testified that the husband bathed only once every 7 to 10 days, contributing to a foul smell from both his body and mouth. Colleagues expressed discomfort working near him due to the odor. Ultimately, the woman decided to end the marriage. This isn't the first case of its kind; in 2018, a Taiwanese man divorced his wife for bathing only once a year.
