Return of the Turkish Grand Prix

On Friday, Formula 1 confirmed that the Turkish Grand Prix will make its comeback to the FIA Formula One World Championship starting in 2027. The agreement with Turkiye's Ministry of Youth and Sports ensures that Istanbul Park will remain on the calendar until 2031. The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) will act as the delivery partner for these upcoming events.

Istanbul Park's Rich Legacy

The last Turkish Grand Prix took place in 2020 and 2021, during which Lewis Hamilton clinched his seventh Drivers' Championship title in 2020, matching Michael Schumacher's record. Istanbul Park first entered the Formula 1 scene in 2005 and quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most technically challenging circuits. The 5.33-kilometer track features significant elevation changes that test both driver skill and vehicle performance. Notably, the multi-apex Turn 8 is a demanding section that requires precision and commitment from drivers.

Valtteri Bottas was the last driver to win at Istanbul Park in 2021, driving for Mercedes. He, along with Lewis Hamilton, is one of only two active drivers to have won the Turkish Grand Prix. Over the years, Turkiye has hosted nine Grands Prix, making it a beloved venue for teams, drivers, and fans alike. Brazilian driver Felipe Massa holds the record for the most wins at Istanbul Park, with three consecutive victories from 2006 to 2008 while racing for Ferrari. Other notable winners include Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, and Jenson Button.

Official Statements on F1's Return

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Formula 1 is among the world's premier sporting events, known for its spectacle and young fan engagement. In Turkiye, it enjoys widespread popularity, particularly among the youth, with nearly 19 million viewers and 7.5 million social media followers. We have hosted Formula 1 nine times, and I am optimistic that Istanbul Park will host five seasons of thrilling races from 2027 to 2031."

Erdogan further emphasized the significance of Turkiye's return to the Formula 1 calendar, highlighting the country's organizational capabilities and hospitality. He extended his congratulations to all involved in bringing Formula 1 back to Turkiye and expressed hope for a strengthened partnership in motorsport.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, shared his excitement about returning to Istanbul, noting the city's unique cultural blend and its importance in the sport's history. He thanked various officials for their support in securing the Grand Prix's return.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem remarked that the return of the Turkish Grand Prix signifies the global growth of the sport and the commitment to expanding the championship in dynamic markets. He acknowledged the collaboration that has made this possible.

Eren Uclertopragi, President of TOSFED, expressed pride in announcing the return of the Turkish Grand Prix, attributing it to the support of the state and the efforts of various ministries. Preparations for the 2027 race are already underway, with a commitment to delivering an exceptional event.
