A Tragic Incident Sparks a Movement
In the Tungel region of Kotli sub-division, a tragic event has ignited a passionate public outcry. Neelam, who was reportedly set ablaze in her home, fought for her life for nearly 10 to 12 days at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh. Her journey began at a local hospital in Kotli, then moved to Mandi, and finally to Nerchowk as her condition deteriorated.
Upon her arrival at PGI, witnesses noted not only her severe burn injuries but also that both of her legs were completely broken.
Sadly, she never returned to her family, leaving behind two young children.
Bhaskar Thakur: A Witness to Her Struggle
The movement for justice did not start on the streets; it originated in a hospital corridor. Bhaskar Thakur, who accompanied Neelam to PGI and remained by her side for five days until her passing, recounted her painful struggle.
He expressed, "I witnessed her fight every moment. She was battling for her children. The injuries were too severe to be explained away. If she couldn't voice her pain, we will raise our voices for her."
After her death, Bhaskar returned to Kotli and initiated a protest alone, which soon attracted many villagers. By Monday, hundreds marched from New Bus Stand Kotli to the SDM office, chanting for justice, with women leading the charge.
Ajay Thakur: A Call to Action
Ajay Thakur addressed the large crowd, delivering a powerful speech that resonated deeply within the valley. He stated, "We have become complacent and indifferent. Everyone thinks that heroes like Bhagat Singh should emerge from elsewhere. Today, it is someone else's daughter who is suffering, and people hesitate to act."
He cautioned that if society remains silent, another daughter might face a similar fate. Thakur also highlighted serious allegations against Neelam's husband, including previous domestic violence complaints and a pending case involving threats of an acid attack.
"We need accountability, not applause," he urged. "The accused must face the harshest consequences."
Prof. Anupama Singh: Ensuring Organization and Peace
Professor Anupama Singh played a crucial role in maintaining the movement's organization and peaceful nature. She noted that the administration had been informed about the rally in advance and time was requested to submit a memorandum.
However, when the protestors arrived at the SDM office, SDM Jagdish Chand was absent despite prior notice, arriving about 20 to 25 minutes late. Prof. Singh remarked, "Such delays raise questions about the administration's commitment to this issue."
Upon his arrival, the SDM accepted the memorandum and assured the protestors that it would be forwarded to the government, promising a thorough investigation.
Rajesh Kapoor: A Unified Community
Social worker Rajesh Kapoor addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the large turnout demonstrated a united community. He stated, "When hundreds gather peacefully, it signifies that injustice has reached intolerable levels. This is not just one family's battle; it is a fight for every daughter."
In a rare show of solidarity, villagers from both Neelam's maternal and marital homes stood together, demanding justice for her brutal treatment.

Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar confirmed that the law is being enforced and that Neelam's husband has been arrested. He assured that the investigation is comprehensive. The victim's parents have also approached the Governor seeking justice.
