Trump's Remarks on Inflation

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump expressed his views on the recent inflation statistics, stating, "I love the inflation," and predicting a significant drop in prices once the conflict with Iran concludes. During a discussion in the Oval Office, he was questioned about the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which indicated an annual inflation rate of 4.2%, the highest in three years. Trump responded, "No, I love it, the numbers were great," and elaborated, "You know what I really love? I love the inflation. You know why?" He attributed this sentiment to the ongoing military actions that have led to the removal of millions of barrels of oil from the market.

Trump continued to discuss oil shipments, claiming, "Nobody knows it. You know who doesn't know about it? Iran, until right now," referring to recent military operations that targeted oil vessels. He stated, "We took out the other night, 22 ships, late at night, with no lights, because they don't have any radar, because we blasted the crap out of it," adding that this is why oil prices have surged to $85 a barrel. "We've been taking out millions of barrels of oil, millions of barrels every night," he reiterated.

Later that day, during a congressional hearing, Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated he was unaware of the U.S. extracting millions of barrels of oil from Iran. He noted that the military had been assisting oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen a notable increase in oil traffic recently. The latest CPI report confirmed an annual inflation rate of 4.2%, with core inflation, excluding food and energy, at 2.9%, aligning with economists' forecasts.

Trump's comments have drawn criticism from some Republicans who worry that escalating prices may impact the party's chances in the upcoming November elections, where they aim to maintain slim majorities in Congress. Democrats quickly condemned the President's statements, with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker sharing a video of Trump's remarks on social media, stating, "People can't afford to feed their families. Your struggle is a joke to him." New Jersey Senator Andy Kim also shared the clip, highlighting Trump's statement, "I love the inflation."
