Trump's Proposal for Palestinian Relocation
President Donald Trump is reportedly considering relocating one million Palestinians to Libya. According to sources, a report indicates that the U.S. is working on a plan to permanently move these individuals from conflict zones to Libya. NBC News reported on Friday that this proposal is being taken "seriously," with discussions having taken place between the Trump administration and Libyan leadership.
The report suggests that the U.S. would release billions of dollars to Libya, funds that had been previously withheld over a decade ago in relation to Palestinian resettlement. Libya, a North African nation, has been deeply divided since the NATO-backed uprising in 2011 that led to the ousting and death of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. However, no final agreement has been reached yet. According to NBC News, Israel has been informed about these discussions, particularly following the military operations initiated in Gaza after Hamas's attacks in October 2023 that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people in Israeli cities.

When approached for comments, an American official dismissed the report, stating that the current situation on the ground is not conducive to such a plan. The official emphasized that there have been no discussions regarding this proposal, deeming it nonsensical. A senior official from Hamas, the group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., also stated that they were unaware of any discussions about relocating Palestinians to Libya.
Bassem Naeem, speaking to NBC News, expressed that Palestinians are deeply connected to their homeland and are committed to fighting for their land, families, and the future of their children. He asserted that it is solely the Palestinians, including those in Gaza, who have the right to decide their fate.
Earlier this month, U.S. media reported that Trump, who took office promising to deport millions, is planning to send migrants to third countries, including Libya. However, the Libyan Government of National Unity has rejected the use of its territory for the deportation of migrants without its knowledge or consent. It was also noted that there has been no coordination with the U.S. regarding the acceptance of migrants. Since returning to power, Trump has repeatedly suggested that Palestinians in Gaza should be taken in by regional Arab countries like Egypt and Jordan, a notion that has been rejected by both Arab states and Palestinian leaders.
